    • The Establishment and Operation of Steering Committee in Large-scale Clinical Trials of Infertility

High quality clinical trial depends on the preliminary research design and optimizing, the quality control in the medium term, the source data verification and statistics in later stages. Steering committee (SC) can meet above requirements. According to the characteristics of the research project, we invited international experts whose professional background are obstetrics and gynecology, statistics and methodology to set up SC. SC will hold regular conference, the content of the conference included project progress and quality control, research assistant training and assessment, conducting knowledge lectures and so on. The establishment of SC ensured the protocol maneuverability, answered PCOS related problems from different professional perspectives, and solved the problems such as how to improve the scientific research output. At the same time, it provides a platform of scientific research practice and self-improvement. It has profound influence on standardizing the management of the clinical trial, strengthening the consciousness of team work, promoting multi-disciplinary team cooperation, expanding scientific research thinking and cultivating clinical research talent.

    • Exploration of a Standardized Model for Cardiothoracic Surgery Resident Training Program Based on a Combined Clinical and Research Oriented Team Approach

ObjectiveTo explore a standardized model for cardiothoracic surgery resident training program based on a combined clinical and research oriented team approach. Methods We conducted this study in a nationally ranked Class AAA hospital among the eleven residents who were accepted into the program. Throughout their training periods, clinical surgical skills were taught by one-on-one mentoring by individually assigned doctoral degree advisors, other attending surgeons and doctoral degree candidates in the program. To foster their scientific curiosity and research skills, regular didactic lectures in basic science and statistical skills by the doctoral thesis advisors, supplemented by monthly journal clubs during which trainees were required to present and discuss a previously assigned topics based on recent clinical cases within the department, thus combining acquisition of clinical skills and theory/research at the same setting. ResultsEleven physicians were selected for this training path. With respect to clinical surgical skills, 4 residents were judged to be sufficient at the end of the first cycle. The other seven residents at the end of the second cycle. One trainee won the third prize in the Medical Skill Competition in the hospital. As for scientific research skills, the team produced 11 scientific articles, one of which was accepted by the annual national conference in cardiothoracic surgery and the first author was invited to present the article. The team submitted four research projects, one won funding at the provincial competition and three within the medical school. ConclusionOur proposed standardized model of cardiothoracic surgery resident training based on a combined clinical and research oriented approach appears to be practical with moderate success. Adaptation of this model by other cardiothoracic surgery training programs in the nation will further attest to its value and functionality.

    • Investigation of Scientific Research Situation of Postgraduates in West China Medical School of Sichuan University

ObjectiveTo investigate scientific research situation of postgraduates in the West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University. MethodsA self-designed questionnaire was used in an investigation concerning scientific research situation among 352 medical postgraduates in the West China Medical School of Sichuan University. Then SPSS 15.1 software was used to analyze the data. ResultsMost experiments, that the postgraduates took, involved multiple technologies, of which, molecular techniques were the most widely-used (reaching 35.5%). Sixty-eight percent students maintained that clinical practice, teaching/learning and scientific research were very important. The most frequently-encountered problem were research design, experimental techniques and methods, the contact with laboratory, and statistical analysis. When encountering the problems, 51.1% postgraduates turned to tutors, and 40.1% dealt with it by themselves. ConclusionIt is suggested that, cultivating scientific research ability and awareness of medical postgraduates should be strengthened, and platforms should be set up for medical postgraduates to carry out research.

    • Exploration and practice in constructing a curriculum system for cultivating scientific research innovation capabilities in clinical medicine postgraduates

Scientific research innovation capability represents a core competence for postgraduate students, with curriculum-based teaching laying the theoretical and technical foundation for their scientific endeavors. However, existing postgraduate courses on scientific research innovation often suffer from issues such as excessive redundancy and overlapping content. Addressing these challenges, the West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, has innovatively developed a curriculum system tailored for clinical medicine master's students. Guided by the innovation chains of clinical and basic scientific research, and grounded in students' practical research needs, the system centers on two flagship courses: clinical research design and statistical analysis, and biomedical research strategies and experimental technical ability. This initiative has proven effective in enhancing students' scientific thinking and innovative capacities.

    • Investigation on the publications of postgraduates with professional degree in clinical medicine during the standardized resident training

ObjectiveTo analyze the status of scientific papers published by clinical medicine postgraduates during the "double-track integration" training period. MethodsData of publications of 634 clinical medicine postgraduate students who were been trained in the "double-track integration" system in West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University from 2015 to 2017 were collected. The data of the papers published during the concurrent training and residency were retrospectively analyzed. Results634 postgraduates with master degree in clinical medicine published 1 038 papers in total. Students from 3 grades published 1.606, 1.554 and 1.785 papers on average respectively, and the overall average number of publications was 1.637 per person. The composition ratios of the journal types of articles were: SCI, 37.96%; MEDLINE, 6.55%; Chinese core journals, 55.49%. Statistical differences were found in the types of journals published in the three grades. The composition ratios of article types were: case report, 24.56%; review, 34.01%; original study, 41.43%. There was no statistical difference in the composition of article types in 3 grades. All 634 graduate students met the requirements for thesis publication and succeeded in completing the training. ConclusionsIn the "double-track integration" training system, postgraduates with master degree in clinical medicine can meet the training requirements of publishing relevant articles prior to graduation.

    • Analysis of the global competitive landscape in artificial intelligence medical device research

The objective of this study is to map the global scientific competitive landscape in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) medical devices using scientific data. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection to examine global research trends in AI-based medical devices. As of the end of 2023, a total of 55 147 relevant publications were identified worldwide, with 76.6% published between 2018 and 2024. Research in this field has primarily focused on AI-assisted medical image and physiological signal analysis. At the national level, China (17 991 publications) and the United States (14 032 publications) lead in output. China has shown a rapid increase in publication volume, with its 2023 output exceeding twice that of the U.S.; however, the U.S. maintains a higher average citation per paper (China: 16.29; U.S.: 35.99). At the institutional level, seven Chinese institutions and three U.S. institutions rank among the global top ten in terms of publication volume. At the researcher level, prominent contributors include Acharya U Rajendra, Rueckert Daniel and Tian Jie, who have extensively explored AI-assisted medical imaging. Some researchers have specialized in specific imaging applications, such as Yang Xiaofeng (AI-assisted precision radiotherapy for tumors) and Shen Dinggang (brain imaging analysis). Others, including Gao Xiaorong and Ming Dong, focus on AI-assisted physiological signal analysis. The results confirm the rapid global development of AI in the medical device field, with “AI + imaging” emerging as the most mature direction. China and the U.S. maintain absolute leadership in this area—China slightly leads in publication volume, while the U.S., having started earlier, demonstrates higher research quality. Both countries host a large number of active research teams in this domain.
