Objective To observing about how effect is the education prescription using by the medical students, looking into whether the manner can attach the students attention and improve on the retrieval ability for them. Methods Choosing one of the cases come from PubMed and drawing out a clinical question. Asking total 100 students to search literature and write search strategy, search results and the reason about the results by chosen (similar to appraisal evidence), and their self-evaluation of this process. Results Of the 100 students, 96 (96%) searched PubMed/MEDLINE, and 79 (79%) searched second research database, 28 (28%) searched Science Citation Index (Web of Science), 38 (38%) chosen one of ten articles according with the articles chosen by the overseas doctors. We found no students weren’t interesting in the education prescription, but 65 (65%) didn’t think the education prescription be easy achieved, at the same time they mentioned that the retrieval problems were solved or profited came from the practice. Conclusions Filling education prescription can attract students attention and induct them to learn the basic concept of EBM, and to practice how to searching evidence and the feedback of students can help improve on teaching work.
Objective The purpose of this study, which focuses on the number of the Cochrane Systematic Review’s (CSR) full texts, protocols and registered titles from Chinese authors, is to show the development of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and promote EBM’s further development in China. Methods On the basis of The Cochrane Library (Issue 1, 2009) and the Cochrane Collaboration (March 2009) periodicals, we performed statistical analysis of different countries that released CSR’s full texts, protocols and registered titles, as well as the time, authors and distribution of the CSR’s full texts, protocols and registered titles in China. Results The publishing rates of the CSR’s full texts, protocols and registered titles in China ranked the seventh, fifth and second, respectively. Although the number of CSR’s full texts and protocols showed an increased annual trend in China, the development of area distribution was unbalanced. Moreover, China’s published articles contained 47 Cochrane collaboration groups, without effective practice and health care groups, consumers and communication groups, and methodology and multiple stenosis groups. Conclusions The current Chinese EBM situation has a great potential in writing CSR. However, there are still many problems that need to be resolved.
With the rapid development of evidence-based medicine during the past two decades, evidence andevidence-based methods were not only used in the field of health care, but also applied to other non-medical fields. Asystematic literature search and a comparative study were conducted to investigate the definition of evidence. We also putforward our own definition of evidence: Evidence is the information from the systematic review process. We also discussedthe development of evidence-based paradigm and hope this will act as a reference for other subjects and industries.
Objectives To establish a course evaluation model for overseas medical students in West China Medical School of Sichuan University, to identify problems in teaching and to solve problems based on evidence so as to futher improve the quality of teaching. Methods We conducted a preliminary course evaluation to determine the limitations of our evaluation methods and to convey our intention to related stakeholders. Firstly, we identified problems in teaching according to the feedback from our students using a questionnaire. Secondly, we proposed an initial list of possible solutions to these problems based on evidence from literature searching and discussion within the Department of Teaching Affairs. We submitted the initial list to the administrative departments, teaching departments (teachers) and students to identify applicable solutions through two rounds of formal consensus. Their attitudes to this procedure of evaluation and decision-making were collected. Finally, incentives were given out by administrative departments and teaching departments to facilitate the implementation of applicable solutions. Results Teachers’ English ability and the didactic teaching methods were the most concerned problems. In addition, some semesters and courses were not well arranged and there was not enough practice time. An initial list of 14 items was submitted to teaching departments and students. They all agreed with the procedure of evaluation and decision-making. We also found that some aspects of the evaluation methods and styles need to be improved. An additional paper would report further results. Conclusion This preliminary evaluation was helpful for improving teaching and formal evaluation in the future. We need to strengthen the English language skills of younger faculty and gradually adopt a model of student-centered and enquiry-based teaching. This process of evaluation and improvement should be applied as a long-term policy and an evidence-based research group should be established to work together with our quality assurance unit.
Objective To investigate the current status of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and clinical controlled trials (CCTs) on pressure sore in China. Methods We searched Chinese Journal of Nursing, Chinese Journal of Practical Nursing and Journal of Nurses Training in CNKI and VIP (January 2000 to December 2005) for Chinese articles on pressure sore, using "pressure sore", "bed sore", "nursing", "treatment", "prevention", "evaluation" and "management" as search terms. The retrieved articles were summarized. Results We identified 16 reports (10 RCTs and 6 CCTs). The studies were judged to be of low quality. There was one study on the evaluation, two on the prevention, and 13 on the treatment of pressure sores. Conclusion The current studies on pressure sore in China are focusing on treatment. Randomized controlled trials of large sample size of pressure sore are needed to improve nursing quality.
Gout is caused by abnormal metabolism of purine. Its most common symptom attack of intense pain and swelling in the joints. Attacks of gout can according to the alteration if it is in acute interval periods. How can we get the optimal effect? The development of methodology has provided much convincing evidence for us to choose the most appropriate treatment.
Objective To investigate on the epidemiologic characteristics of nosocomial infection in surgery departments of general hospitals by analyzing the data collected from documents which were published in recent years, so as to provide references for the construction of precautionary system model. Methods Applying comprehensive search strategies, we searched various electronic databases as CBM (1978 to 2008), CNKI (1912 to 2008), VIP (2001 to 2009) and WanFang Data (2001 to 2009). MeSH terms and/or text words included: nosocomial infections, cross infection, hospital infection, prevent and control. Data from top and second grade hospital were included in this analysis. Results Sixty four articles and a total of 1 990 929 inpatients were included. Results showed: average nosocomial infection rate was 4.46%; the total rates of medicine department and surgery department were 23.28% and 17.33% respectively and no significant difference was found between the two departments; the infection rates of G– and G+ germ were 47.71% and 21.31% respectively; the rates of average antibiotics use was 60.59% and the rate of missing report was 12.42%. Noscomial infection was related to season change and the wave peak was from February to May. Conclusion Most of the included studies were retrospective studies and cross-sectional studies. The type of data was inconsistency and incomplete, causing weak strength of evidence. High missing rate of reports makes the precautionary model hard to build in future.
