癲癇是一種具有永久致癇傾向的慢性腦部疾病，同時具有一定的致殘率和致死率。經過正規的抗癲癇治療，臨床上仍有近 1/3 的癲癇發展為耐藥性癲癇，為抗癲癇藥物治療帶來挑戰。最新的研究證實，相當比例的耐藥性癲癇為自身免疫性癲癇，免疫反應的異常激活參與其發病。免疫性癲癇是基于自身免疫性腦炎提出的概念，它是免疫介導的、通常伴有新發難治性癲癇發作、亞急性進行性認知衰退以及行為或精神功能障礙的自身免疫性疾病，此類患者腦脊液中可檢測到神經元特異性相關抗體。早期免疫調節治療除了能有效控制癲癇癥狀外，還可有效緩解某些癲癇綜合征的發展。因此，早期進行免疫調控治療可能成為未來免疫性癲癇治療的關鍵。
