真實世界研究一般采用大樣本人群，根據患者的實際病情和意愿，非隨機選擇治療措施，開展長期評價，注重有意義的結局治療，評價臨床實踐的外部有效性和安全性。真實世界研究起源于實用性研究，成為了醫療管理者、醫務工作人員及患者之間的信息傳遞紐帶。真實世界研究涵蓋的范圍較廣，除治療性研究外，還可用于病因、診斷、預后等方面的研究，評價新藥或檢測方法的采用率、安全性、不良反應及患者生存情況。真實世界研究在心血管領域流行甚早，在腫瘤學方面則剛剛起步，乳腺癌信息登記系統的迅速發展為真實世界研究提供了一個嶄新的平臺。真實世界研究同樣可以應用于乳腺癌診斷方面、治療和預后方面。乳腺癌的真實世界研究正越來越具有科學性和實踐性。
